Homework Policies-
The purpose of assigning homework is to offer students an opportunity to independently practice newly acquired skills, and to work on ongoing skills or projects. These assignments are meant to take about 45 minutes. This does not include independent reading or studying. Students will need to use their class time wisely in order to keep within these time limits. They will be given the opportunity to begin work at school and will need to finish whatever is left at home. Should you find that your child is never doing homework, or is often spending too much time doing homework, please let me know. Homework should never bring tears, nor should it consume all of your child's free time.
Homework is not graded, but it is expected to be completed before returning to school the next morning unless other instructions have been given. Any homework missing or not finished will be marked in your child's agenda by me. If your child is absent, they will be given extra time to complete the assignments missed. If there is an emergency at home, or a certain circumstance that the work could not be completed and handed in on time, please let me know by note, email, or leave a message on my voice mail.
Agendas-
Students will keep track of their assignments in their agenda. All assignments for the day, and important dates will be marked on the agendas. Most work that needs to be done at home will be unfinished class work. All assignments will be listed on the white board in the classroom as well as on my website. The students are required to write this in their agendas Monday-Thursday. Please check over your child's homework and then sign the agenda each night. The agenda is very important because it is the first line of communication that I use to keep you informed of your child's progress in both academics and behavior.
Grades-
Academic averages determine a student's report card grades. These grades are affected by tests, quizzes, and class projects. Homework will be checked, but not graded. Each assignment graded will receive a point value depending on the importance of the assignment. For example, tests and long term projects will be worth more than quizzes.
Water Bottles-
Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to school. They may only be filled with water. Bottles filled with anything else will need to be poured out.
Personal Items-
Please instruct your child not to bring any personal items to school. We are not responsible for any personal items that are lost or stolen.
Morning Arrival-
Students may begin arriving to campus at 8:45 a.m. Please do not come earlier than this since there is no adult supervision before this time. Students who arrive to class after 9:00 a.m. are considered late, and will need to go to the office to receive a tardy slip.
Birthdays-
If you wish, you may send in treats to celebrate your child's birthday. Please be aware that homemade goodies are no longer allowed to be sent in. In order for all students in our class to participate in your child's celebration, please send in items that are peanut and tree nut free or any non-food items such as pencils, stickers, puzzels, etc.
Depending on our schedule, I usually set aside time at the end of the day for birthday celebrations.
Volunteers-
Parents are always welcome in the classroom to volunteer. District policy states that in order to volunteer you must go through training. If you have already been trained through the Deer Valley School District, you do not need to attend the training again. If you have not attended training, there will be opportunities to do so throughout the year. Please note that it is required that you attend volunteer training in order to chaperone field trips.
